More Than a Shed: A Storage Blog

When Self-Storage Units Make House Calls

The principle of self-storage isn't exactly complex. You rent a unit, then fill it with the items requiring storage—and that about covers it. But it can be an undeniable hassle. You need to determine what will actually be housed in the unit, and then make arrangements to get these items there. It's time-consuming, and despite the pertinent fact that you have a definite need for additional storage space, it can all feel rather inconvenient. So why not arrange for the storage to come to you?

Mobile Storage

Instead of looking in your local area for a self-storage facility offering a traditional setup (lockable units spread out across a lot or enclosed in a central building), look for a company that offers mobile storage using moveable storage containers.

The Containers

Mobile storage brings the storage to you, making it far more convenient for you to make the necessary decisions about storage. The container itself may be a purpose-built repository or it may be a repurposed shipping container. Whatever the physical form of the container (which will vary depending on its size, and multiple sizes are available), it will be weatherproof.

Home Delivery

The container is delivered to your home on a flatbed truck. This is where some homes may encounter a hurdle. You need to have ample space for the container to be safely unloaded and placed. This is usually your driveway, but there must also be adequate room for your vehicles to get in and out. Mobile storage containers generally can't be left on the curb or in another public area outside your home. They can only be placed on private property.

Ready for Loading

Once the mobile unit is safely in place, it's ready to be loaded. You can take your time, determining which items from your home should be placed inside. There's no rush, and therefore no stress—nor do you have to transport anything from your home to a storage facility. Everything can be moved by hand (ideally with some willing helpers).

Stay or Go

What happens once you've filled and locked the unit? You have a couple of options. The unit can actually remain where it is on your property, provided its location is convenient and non-obtrusive. The mobile storage container essentially becomes a pop-up shed on your property. Alternatively, you can contact the unit provider for collection. The filled unit will be picked up and transported to a secure warehouse or fenced lot for the duration of your rental period.

Although the principle of self-storage is convenient, the process can be extremely inconvenient for some—unless the storage unit comes to you.

About Me

More Than a Shed: A Storage Blog

Years ago, if someone needed to store an item, they would often put the item in a shed. This approach was convenient, but it also left the item exposed to changes in heat and humidity. The storage world has changed that. Storage units have come such a long way over the past few years, with many now being climate-controlled. Even so-called "outdoor" storage units are usually better sealed than the storage sheds of years past. We are passionate about storage and are going to be writing more about it in the coming months. We hope you'll check out some of our articles on this blog.
